Drakensang: Online is a free to play, action MMORPG developed by Bigpoint. The game has been live since 2011 and remains one of the most succesfull MMORPG's in Europe.
Since I joined the company in 2014 as a Level Design Intern, I was able to see the project grow and expand to Korea and China. I was also able to work on the award winning "Rise of Balor" expansion and later the "Sands of Malice" expansion.
As a Level Designer, I work closely together with the Content and Narrative Designers to develop a concept for new areas in the game. I start by sketching layout mockups which are interesting to navigate for the player and fit to the theme we decided on. Then I start to create flowcharts of the quests in this area and combine these with my mockup to mark all the important landmarks and quest objectives. When the concept is complete, it is my reponsibility to realise this area and I start to build the area in our editor with the modular assets which the Artists provided. During this phase I constantly check with the Artists if they think my level can visually be improved or if we require new assets. During this time, the Content Designers will also setup all the quests and monsters in the map. Wherever possible, I also take over tasks from the Content Designers to script events, setup quests and create animated sequences.
